One of the attorneys turned around and stopped the media from following farther. The reporter shoved a microphone in his face.
“Does Mr. Bertano have connections to Switzerland?” one newswoman asked.
“What evidence do they have against your client?” another reporter shouted out.
That got the lawyer’s attention. “None. They have no evidence against Mr. Bertano. He has not been arrested, nor has he been charged. Now . . . if you could give Mr. Bertano the courtesy of not being treated like a criminal, we’d appreciate it. Thank you.” He walked off, even more pissed.
The camera cut back to the first reporter. “Reporting live from the federal courts downtown, I’m Laurie Summers. John, Spencer . . . back to you in the newsroom.”
“Thanks, Laurie.” The camera focused on one guy behind the desk. “We’ll keep you posted on any development in that story.”
They moved on to weather.
What a relief Zach wasn’t there. If he had been, I hadn’t seen him in the dark.
“Tatum, we should talk,” my dad said.
“About what?” I replied, still not taking my eyes off the TV. For some reason, my imagination was scanning all of Sergio’s features.
Mother let out an obnoxious huff. “About your boyfriend. Now, he wasn’t on TV, but that appeared to be his family. Tatum, we do not need to get wrapped—”
“We don’t know who that was.” I jerked my head toward her. I felt my nostrils flaring as I continued to yell, “Bottom line. Did you see Zach? No.”
“Tate, calm down. What your mother is trying to say—”
“I heard what she said.” I damn near snapped my neck by whipping my head from side to side so fast. “She’s going to make me break up with him because that may—or may not—have been his uncle. So what if it was? What if he never talks to him? You and Mom both have family you don’t talk to. So don’t—”
“Tatum. Calm down. And stop yelling at us.” My dad took a deep breath and relaxed his shoulders. “Look . . . find out what’s going on. I’m pretty sure that’s an uncle of Zach’s. What they’re taking him in for is very serious, Tate. Very serious. But you know that.”
“I know.” Another hushed response.
“Have you even considered how this affects you?”
“Me? No. What do you mean?” I wasn’t sure what Dad was getting at, but by his heavy breathing and sighing, his patience was wavering.
“Since you’re dating one of them, the police could pull you in for questioning. That’s how they work. They question everyone in the suspect’s circle.”
“I don’t know anything. I’ve never even met them.” My heart pounded so fast it hurt my chest. The police? Questioning? My thoughts went straight to a small, dreary-looking room with a one-way mirror.
CAST YOUR CHARACTERS -
Oh joy! One of the hardest things I’ve done mentally.
This is one reason why I’ve never wanted to show any faces with the book trailer, covers and internet…because I’ve had a hard time “finding” my cast.
Let’s start with Tatum. She’s my heroine from beginning to end. In the book I describe her as a pale skinned, petite blonde girl with questionable fashion sense! So on my book covers (Girl Spoken For & Girl Divided Two) you only see one side of the model’s face. That model is my cousin—Tiffany Diamond!
If I had to pick a celebrity of sorts, I’m not sure who I’d chose. Tiffany matches as well as anyone, but if I had to choose I would say Amanda Seyfried. She could work.
Zach. Dear ol’ Zach! The Italian model that has a walk no girl could resist. Lips of perfection and face right out of a GQ magazine. Yup. He’s made up! In all seriousness, I have found a couple of guys with certain looks that are close, but not completely Zach. The closest male celebrity who looks similar (but not exactly) is James Franco. The good looking James Franco. The only thing about James Franco, is he’s not as tall as I’d imagined Zach. Another reason why he isn’t the perfect fit.
That man has more looks than I do.
Nigel. The British gentleman looks to me like James Dean or Zach Efron. Obviously, I reference James Dean in the novels. I fear even saying Zach Efron because most of the time Nigel looks exactly like James Dean, not Zach Efron. Again, this is why I would have a terrible time casting. But keep in mind Zach Efron wasn’t around in the late 80’s.
To cast some of the Bertanos would be even harder, but let me cast Nicola & Catalina—They are the easiest to me!
Nicola, Zach’s dad, is described as a big, strong damn good looking Italian man. In Zach’s family they start young, so Zach’s parents are no exception—they’re “young.” I see Joe Manganiello as Zach’s dad, maybe! I mean…can you go wrong with Joe?! I think not.
For the thoughtful, caring, nurturing and the most undertstanding Mom in the world—Catalina—I think a young Sophia Loren fits her perfectly. Catalina is a beautiful, full-figured Italian woman. Her nickname is Cat, for more than a few reasons.
If you look at the “cast” so far, maybe you can see why Tatum feels she doesn’t fit within the Bertano family. Tatum’s pale skin and blonde hair stick out worse than a longer second toe that’s painted neon green!
Sad, but true, I will crowd watch just to see if I spot one of my characters. And once I did. I spotted the perfect, I mean the perfect Mattea (Matt) at Webster University in St. Louis, MO. Oh this guy would have made the best Mattea (Zach’s cousin, also Andi’s boyfriend). He was leaving the weight room, no joke! I giggled all the way to my car, not sure why, but I did. Maybe because I was laughing to myself, “Hey, Matt! I know you, but you don’t know me…”
