"I suppose I should thank you," Keelin stuttered. She tried to regain her composure as she lifted her chin at him.

"Of all the…how do I end up with the woman that is stubborn as all get-out?" Flynn said to himself as he started the motor and whipped towards shore. Keelin pulled the towel that he had handed around her and tried to get warm.

"You know, most women would have thrown themselves on me in gratitude. You know, promising anything I wanted? Offers of undying devotion? Baked goods? No. You can barely thank me." Flynn glared at her.

Keelin stared regally at him from across the boat.

"I am sure I would have been fine. I just needed to cut across the current is all, and I was a bit disoriented."

"A bit? You were a quarter mile out! You were shark bait. A goner! What were you even thinking? Are you insane?" Flynn lost it as they motored quietly into the cove. His shouts echoed off the walls of the empty cove and Ronan went silent on the beach.

"Hey! You aren't the boss of me! I'll have you know that I am a trained diver. I study this. This is what I do."

"Trained? Hardly! If you were trained you would know not to go diving alone and perhaps maybe to study the waters ahead of time and know that there is a nine-knot current that runs outside the cove. Had I not been out fishing today and heard your cry for help you would have been gone in minutes!" Flynn cut the motor and raged at her.

Keelin stood up on shaky legs and yelled at him.

"I'll have you know that I am a professional!"

"A professional pain in the ass!"

They were nose to nose in the rocking boat. Keelin's breath huffed out and her chest heaved.

Flynn sighed and laid his forehead against hers, surprising her.

"Just. Just don't ever do that again. Please."

At twenty-three, I’m left with a decision. The outcome could be life or death.

Trent hit me once, and I cried. Then he hit me again. And again. After a while, I got used to it, as I slept on the floor beside his bed, night after night.

Everyone told me to leave him, but I can't. He won't let me.

The moment I wanted to give up on myself and any form of hope, Kemper—a tall, sexy Marine just home from Afghanistan walked into my bar. With one look in his eyes, I saw pain that mirrored my own.

At first, I thought maybe he would be my prince charming, riding in to save me, but all it took was one tragedy for me to remember…fairy tales don’t exist in real life.

*The content in this book discusses domestic violence and is suitable for readers over 18*

“That’s twice in one day I’ve had to save you,” Kemper says, his soft voice soothing my nerves as he presses a cool compress against my forehead. His other hand is cupped around my cheek. No one has ever cared enough to save me. Kemper’s face is inches from mine and I can smell the cool mint on his breath from the gum he’s been chewing.

“I guess so,” I mutter, falling a little deeper into his gaze.

His thumb runs down the length of my nose, and while most of me is feeling pain, that sensation still drives quivers through my body. “Does that hurt?” he asks.

I shake my head, “Not too much,” I say, noticing a slight ache in my neck.

His thumb moves over to my right cheekbone and he presses gently. “How about that?” All I feel is the warmth from his skin. I shake my head again. He does the same for my left cheekbone. This time I wince. It hurts. I clench my eyes and I hear him yell to someone to grab ice. “Is this the first time he’s hit you?” Kemper’s brows are bowed toward his nose while his thumb continues to trace small circles around my cheek. I’d rather lean into his hand than respond.

In truth, I just don’t want to answer him, but he’s still staring at me, waiting for a response. I look down, away from his gaze. The ache in my chest, mixed with feeling like a weak woman, makes me want to cry, but I won’t cry in front of all these people. His finger curls under my chin and he tilts my face back up to look at him. His eyes are kind and caring, yet pained at the same time. The light is hitting them at the perfect angle, giving them the slightest shimmer in the center of each pupil. Then there are his lips—I can’t stop looking at those either. They’re full and capable. They look like they have the ability to kiss in a way I’ve definitely never been kissed. I want to touch his lips, but I belong to Trent—the asshole that just hit me.

Hacon slouched in a rough, heavy chair before the fire, heartily approving of the new-style fireplace and chimney set in the wall. It was far better than the usual, a hearth in the center of the room with an inadequate venting hole in the roof. He wondered how Dugald always managed to find such fine quarters for them. This had to be one of the few houses in Berwick that still had an intact thatched roof, one untouched by the fires that even now scorched the town. After glancing at the plunder scattered on the table in the center of the room, he fixed his gaze upon the female plunder sprawled unconscious at his feet.

Twice the girl had come awake while strapped to his back. Twice she had wrapped her lovely slim hands about his throat. Twice Dugald had had to strike her unconscious again to save his cousin. Hacon grinned. She had spirit. Dugald could well be right—she was the devil’s child, even though she had been hidden away in a convent. He would be sure to keep all weapons out of her reach. She could prove to be a very troublesome bounty.

But a bonnie one, he mused, leaning forward. She looked very tempting sprawled on the sheepskin with her thick raven hair splayed out around her. Her headdress had been an early victim of the battle in the streets. While he suspected her too-thin build was a result of the famine that had ravaged the area over the last two years, he found no fault in it. There were curves enough to please him. Her skin was the soft white of ivory touched with all the warmth of good health. He easily recalled her magnificent eyes, their vivid green enhanced by sparks of fury and defiance as she had faced him in the convent.

“Do ye think I have harmed her?”

Glancing up at Dugald, who stood on the other side of the girl, Hacon shook his head. “She breathes easily and there is a growing flickering in her eyelids. She will wake soon.”

“Then ye had best guard your throat.”

The way Dugald eyed the girl, as if she were as great a threat as any well-armed Englishman, made Hacon laugh softly. “She has more spirit than many another in this place.”

“Aye, which will make her a muckle lot of trouble. Wouldnae it be wiser to leave her behind?”

“Much wiser, but I willnae do it.”

“Why? She is naught but a skinny wee lass.”

“Ah, now there is a puzzle.” Hacon shrugged. “I just willnae.”

Jennet had grasped consciousness in time to hear the one man’s disparaging description of her and the other’s response. Her head ached and she knew it was their fault. She had made no move to reveal that she was now awake; her captor’s answer had interested her since it might reveal her fate.

Finally, as I held my breath, he murmured, “Fuck it.”
His lips met mine gently, as if he were testing the sensation. He must have liked what he felt because the kiss became consuming. I matched his intensity, equally anxious to finally have this between us.
He was the best kisser ever.
Not that I’d had tons of lips on mine, but there was no way any man was better at it. His kiss varied between tenderness, passion and exploration, keeping me constantly guessing. The lips I’d admired before proved how perfect they were.
He pulled back and I worried I’d done something wrong, because I didn’t want it to end. His eyes did that searching thing again, but this time with a soft gleam in them. Jackson wasn’t the type of man you took control from. I waited for him to find what he looked for.
He swooped down and this time our embrace moved beyond passion, to something I’d definitely never experienced. The kissing was hotter and his hands were more forceful along with his lips. They roamed down my back to my bottom, gripping it as if laying claim. It thrilled me, all of it. With his hips pressed against mine, I felt his own arousal.
And I wanted to lay claim myself.
His lips traveled across my jaw, down my neck and journeyed over my collarbone.
Jackson abruptly pulled away, this time ripping himself away and out of my reach. He panted heavily, as if just finishing a race. His expression almost harsh, he said, “What am I going to do with you?”
My response was born from a need he had ignited. “Kiss me again?”
