“Private! Do I sound like I’m fucking joking!?”

Lawrence hadn’t really believed that there even was such a thing as a ‘Code Orange’. It had been whispered about when he was enlisted, but it seemed like one of those rumors that got started to scare rookies. Code Orange was a complete, permanent quarantine to be maintained with lethal force. They were abandoning anything and everything within the hot zone. And tonight, the hot zone was the entire city of Detroit.

He heard a click behind his ear. It was the unmistakable sound of a pistol being cocked. He felt the cold barrel on the back of his neck. In front of him, a small crowd had gathered on the road. About twenty-five men, women and children stood looking back at him demanding to be let through. Some of them shouted curses at the soldiers, while a couple of others had tearfully fallen to their knees. They were begging to be let out. They were innocent civilians and they were pleading with them… with him. Lawrence tried to avoid eye contact with the desperate and—Jesus help me—innocent people on the other side of the line.

“You have until the count of three to open fire or I will fucking grease you and do it myself!”

Lawrence put his finger on the trigger of his rifle and put his sight on the largest, most aggressive-looking man in the crowd. He was wearing a denim jacket and a Detroit Tigers hat. He was shouting at the soldiers behind the barricade, foaming with rage. Spit rained out of his mouth and collected on his scrabbly beard as he demanded to be let through.

“Three!”

The barrel of the pistol felt alive with the promise of pain, like a hornet’s tiny feet crawling down his neck. It was a completely unnerving sensation—that it could sting him at any moment. If he tried to swat it away, he would definitely be stung, but there were no guarantees that remaining frozen would keep him safe either. And in this scenario, the sting would be fatal. Reluctantly, Lawrence took a deep breath.

“Two!”

In that instant of indecision, Lawrence thought of his family. Were they in the quarantine zone? They were a half hour drive out of the city center, but he didn’t know where the military considered ‘ground zero’ so he couldn’t be sure. Either way, he knew he couldn’t help them if he was dead.

He took a deep breath. Jesus forgive me. The man wearing the jean jacket—the man he was seconds from shooting—hesitated for a second and looked down. There was a little girl pulling on the pocket of his jeans. The man knelt down and hugged her. She was obviously his daughter and he was quietly comforting her. Lord, I can’t do this.

“One!”

The last thing Lawrence heard was the gunshot that sent a bullet into the back of his spine. He didn’t feel pain, just surprise. He only realized that he had fallen to the pavement when he noticed that he was looking straight up at the sky as the first hint of dawn approached. He had never looked directly up as the sun rose or set. He had always just looked at the horizon. This new perspective was beautiful really. On one side of the sky, it was still fully night-time. Clouds were blocking the stars so it was pitch black. On the other side, the hint of light, the hint of color peeked into the periphery of his vision. Between horizons is an expansive slow gradation of dark to light that seemed to be increasing in intensity as if the day were an electric range slowing cycling up. The irony of watching the day powering up as he powered down made him grin for a moment. If he read this in one of his student’s creative writing assignments, he would have told him or her that the thought was a little ‘on the nose.’

Lawrence listened with dull, fading ears to gales of automatic gunfire as the other Guardsmen opened fire on the crowd. The last thing he thought was ‘is it starting to rain?’

Behind the Story: Life After the Undead

I am fascinated with zombies—obsessed, if you will—and I have been since the first time I watched Night of the Living Dead many, many years ago. When I get really stressed out, I often dream of the undead and have to find ways to fight against them. That is where the inspiration for Life After the Undead came from.

The dream occurred several years ago, and while I don’t remember the exact details, I recall that my spouse and I were hiding in a small town while all of the zombies were migrating through. They were heading West so the humidity didn’t cause them to deteriorate faster. I woke up and thought, “Hey, that’s a great idea!”  So I fleshed out the story.

It started out as a short story focusing on one small snippet in time. That story was published somewhere (I can’t remember and it’s no longer linked on my blog), and then I decided to expand it into a novel.

The first attempt was an adult novel. I’m fairly certain there were some cuss words in it and a bit more carnage. I decided to send out queries for the story to agents. For the first round, I sent it to 31 agents, all of which rejected it, except one who suggested I turn it into a young adult novel and then resubmit. 

So I did. This required me to clean up the language a bit, take out some of the gore (although it still has its fair share), and make my main character a bit more naïve. I believe I also changed it from third person to first person. I sent it back in, feeling pretty good, and then she rejected it. But that didn’t discourage me. I sent it out again as a young adult novel.

For the second round, I queried 28 agents, all of whom rejected it. After that, I sent it to a few indie publishers, and one of them picked it up. I met a book cover designer online who painted (honest to goodness painted!) covers, so I commissioned him to create the cover. 

The way the deal worked was that he would send the cover idea, then it was up to the publishing company to put on the title and my byline, which they did. The artist was then free to sell the original painting, which he did. However, I decided that I liked it so much I wanted one for my collection, so I asked him to create me another with my title and byline on it. It wasn’t something he normally did, but he did it for me. The painting proudly hangs in my house.

Life After the Undead is one of my favorite stories. One of the things I like so much about zombies is that they allow me to explore the question of what it means to be human. That’s a theme that runs through a lot of my books. Plus, I just really like zombies.

As the years went by, I wanted to breathe some life back into the story (pun intended), so I decided to republish with another publishing house. This allowed me to go back and make edits, expand the story and take out some things that bothered me, and I got a new cover. 

It was a lot of fun to go back and reread the story and make changes. I’m feeling pretty good about the story, and I think it’s closer to my vision of how I originally imagined it. Every time I reread it, I find a new aspect that makes me enjoy the story all over again. 

I would have imagined that after all this time and changes the story would get old, but it hasn’t. It’s still one of my favorites.

Suddenly he knew exactly what the next few minutes would bring.They find the first body slumped against the wall of one of the outer buildings. The young man, little more than a boy, is propped up at an awkward angle, his face frozen into an expression filled with so much fear that it was difficult to look at him. And then there was more. More bodies, more blood, more horror than Ryder can take in. He feels sick to his stomach and, for a few moments, he is a teenage boy again picking through the dead carcasses that had littered the Kelly compound. He shakes his head, trying to bring his focus back to the present. Bodies litter the streets and hang over thresholds. He blinks the sweat running into his eyes away, trying not to dwell on the death that surrounds him. He couldn’t think about the awfulness, about the fact that most of the dead were so young. They break into the square, yet by then Ryder had known what they would find. Val swears and when Ryder looks across at him it is to find that his sardonic, ever smug half-brother looks like he is going to be sick. “What the… how the hell did they do this?” Val splutters, lifting his hand to his head and looking around wildly. “How did the Lewises manage to do this? We were right here for goodness sake! How did we not know this was happening?” Ryder doesn’t answer him. He had no answers, just the sickness that rolled around his stomach. Beside him Connell turns and vomits on to the ground. Ryder isn’t surprised to see one of the hard-bitten Andak soldiers displaying such weakness. He was pretty close to joining him in heaving out the contents of his own stomach. Out of the corner of his eye he catches sight of a movement and lifts his gun warningly. Ian sits in the dust outside one of the hovels the Brownelys called homes. It takes Ryder a minute to realise that it was Ian’s house, the same one he had seen him standing in the doorway of yesterday. He moves forward, ready to offer assistance. It wasn’t until he was much closer that he became aware of the fact that Ian clutched a lifeless body in his arms.

Hi everyone, My name is DeeDee and I live in a beautiful part of Devon, England, with my family. I’ve always loved to read, and I’ve never been picky about which genre I read in. I’m just as happy curled up with a regency romance as I am with a dystopian adventure. When I first wrote Broken City I had no idea that it would turn in to a series, but Deeta’s story begged to be told. Prologue

Bang. 

That noise.

Bang. Bang.

So loud. It feels like it's coming from inside my own head.

Bang.

I cover my ears with my hands, pulling my knees up to my chest, trying to block out the whole world for a moment. I just need to think.

I don't know what to do about her, I really don't. I can't just do nothing. She isn't right, however much I try and convince myself otherwise. I have to accept the truth. I have to admit that whatever is behind that door, isn’t my cousin. Not anymore. But that doesn’t make any of this any easier.

When I found her, outside the door collapsed and covered in blood, I completely freaked out, what if she had this thing, the illness? I had to block out all my deep rooted fears about catching the disease while I carried her in and cleaned her off. I didn’t have any choice, did I? There’s no one else left. I don’t even know how she got here, was she heading this way on purpose, coming to see me? Or was it simply a coincidence that it’s my door she passed out in front of?

I left her to sleep. She slept for days. She slept for so long I started to fear that I was too late, that she was already dead.

Then movement.

I heard her get up out of the bed and move about the room. I waited. I didn't talk for fear of what she might say, for fear of learning what had truly happened to her. 

She switched. Day to day. Minute to minute. One moment she would be speaking, albeit very slurred and stilted words that I could never really understand. The next I’d just hear screaming and smashing, as things would be thrown around in a violent rage. It was terrifying.

Now, I'd give anything for that emotion. Now all I can hear is growling, moaning, shuffling. 

And banging.

Bang. Bang. Bang.

I fear she is going to bring that flimsy door down soon, making my decision for me. I'm not ready for it, not yet. I’ve already lost too many people. She might be the only one I have left.
