Cover Reveal ~ Licked by Brooke Blaine

Licked by Brooke Blaine

Date of Publication: November 11, 2015

As the owner of Licked, an eclectic ice creamery and bar, Ryleigh Phillips doesn't have time for that love stuff. Serving up Nibble My Nuts sundaes and Drunken Sailor boozy shakes are as close to an orgasmic affair as she's had in months thanks to her expanding empire—until the night of her ten-year high school reunion.

When Ryleigh's crush, gorgeous ex-football god Cameron Mathis, comes streaking into her life (literally—streaking), she begins to wonder if she really can have it all.

Wouldn't it just figure that the moment you think life is perfect is when it falls spectacularly apart?

Enter Hunter Morgan, the contractor in charge of Licked's renovations. Devastatingly handsome, and a smartass to boot, he's got his eyes on Ryleigh from the moment he finds her passed out on his couch (yeah, that's a long story). There's just one tiny complication—he happens to be Cameron's best friend.

When the lines between relationships and friendships blur, and it's impossible to choose between two delicious flavors, what's a girl to do? Taste a sample of each? Or go out and get LICKED?

 About Brooke Blaine

You could say Brooke Blaine was a book-a-holic from the time she knew how to read; she used to tell her mother that curling up with one at 4 a.m. before elementary school was her ‘quiet time.' Not much has changed except for the espresso I.V. pump she now carries around and the size of her onesie pajamas.

Flash Point is Brooke's debut solo novel, and she is the co-author of the erotic serial, A Desperate Man, with Ella Frank. The latter has scarred her conservative southern family for life, bless their hearts. Licked, a romantic comedy, will be released on November 11th, 2015.

If you'd like to get in touch with her, she's easy to find - just keep an ear out for the Rick Astley ringtone that's dominated her cell phone for ten years.

Excerpt:

Annmar scrunched back into her pillow. This wasn’t a cat. The face was too pointed, never mind the sleek body three times as long as it was tall. Yet when she looked into its face, the familiar eyes belonged to…

“Daeryn?”

Eyes squinting, the animal’s ears pressed flat. Its head sank, giving a little jerk up and down.

Had he…nodded? “That is you.” Daeryn. This was a polecat. Her drawings had been correct, but not the same as seeing one uninjured, acting normal. Or as normal as a polecat in someone’s bed would act.

She pressed her fingertips to her temples. Oh, Lord, just stop thinking already. But her head didn’t hurt, her vision wasn’t cloudy, and neither were her thoughts. She lowered her hands and looked around to confirm they were alone before fixing her gaze on…him. “What are you doing in my room?”

His shoulders lifted.

That was a shrug. He half-crouched and jumped to the foot of the bed, then to the floor, all before she knew that’s what he had in mind. He disappeared behind the end of her bedstead.

She half-sat up, and as she started swinging her legs around, a hand pulled down the extra quilt that hung on the end of her bed. Annmar gasped and scooted under her covers. A moment later, Daeryn’s tousled brown hair came into view. The quilt swung through the air, and he stood, the fabric draped over his shoulders and held closed in the front.

He squinted at her, his expression the same as the polecat’s, looking very sleepy. “Sorry,” he muttered. “Didn’t mean to surprise you.”

What was she supposed to say to that? He’d been in her room. Sleeping in her room. In her bed! Oh, Lord, what would Mother… Nothing. Mother wasn’t around to worry about anymore, as Mary Clare had pointed out. Annmar had no one to answer to, Blighted Basin society included. Their lack of rules completely befuddled her. How did these people function?

Still. This was highly improper. She glared at him, and he seemed to shrink beneath the quilt, drawing it closer to his body. He was likely naked.

She heated, the blush running from her chest up over her face and…down. Thinking of it just brought on more heat. Mercy, in her bed. Had he been…

“You…uh, you haven’t been in…here as…” She swallowed.

His eyes widened, and he shook his head vehemently. “Only as a polecat.” He took a step back. “I wouldn’t do that… Not to you.” He turned and walked to the door. “I’ll leave.”

Yes, he most certainly was naked under there, and a part of her was curious. She was nineteen, a grown woman. Her first look at him had been brief—she swallowed—but good. “Hold on a minute,” she gasped.

He paused in the open doorway and half-turned to face her.

“I don’t understand what you’re doing in my room.”

“Sleeping here.”

“Why?”

His brows and shoulders lifted at the same time. He looked as confused as she felt when he stepped out and closed the door.

Tap.

Tap.

Tap.

My eyes snapped open at the noise on my window.

Cold dread filled me, making it hard to breathe.  No.

Tap.

Tap.

I could ignore it. Hope that it wasn’t him. If it was him, I could hope that he’d give up and go home. Except, deep down I knew that he wouldn’t, not until I spoke with him. Until then, he was going to keep it up, and it was only going to get more insistent until he got a response.

Tap.

My decision was made. I wrapped my comforter around me and went to the dormer window. I held my breath as I parted the curtains and looked down.

At first, I didn’t see anything. The backyard to my mom’s house is small, with a wall of flowers separating it from Mr. Samson’s yard. But then, another pebble hit the glass, making me shriek. Then I saw movement below.

Disheveled dark hair.

Dull, blue eyes.

Zachary Harington looking up at me. Expecting me. Waiting for me.

Excerpt:

I left one shelf bare for my memory boxes. I stacked the shoe-sized cardboard boxes so their labels showed. Freshman Year, Sophomore Year, Junior Year. The first two boxes were filled with memories that I collected to keep safe. My Junior Year box felt empty. I removed its lid and took out the orchard ticket stub, the pictures of the guys wrestling in the dark, and a dried purple rose. Jared handed me the rose at school the morning of Sweetest Day. I could only guess what might fill my box the rest of the year. Will I even make any new friends? How would people react when they saw my hand? They’d probably think I’m the creepy new girl and be grossed out by my claw. I took a deep breath and put the box back.

A piece of paper stuck out from between the pages of one of my books. I tugged it free and unfolded it. It was a note Jared wrote to me about two months after we started going out.

Star,

Please don’t be mad at me for the whole TBH thing. I just didn’t know what to say to Jan. I shouldn’t have said anything. I like you a lot! You are my girl. I don’t want anyone else.

Love, Jared

A sigh escaped me. I never got the whole TBH—to be honest—thing. You opened yourself up for drama if you posted a picture with the letters TBH online. A girl named Jan did that and Jared took the bait. He had to honestly say something about her, so he commented under the picture that she was cute. My phone blew up with text messages telling me about it. I cried and sent Jared a text telling him I wanted to break up. I felt so stupid. The entire student body of Cedar High knew Jared told another girl she was cute. He slipped me the note during Algebra class the next day. I forgave him.

excerpt

FREEFALLING.

Adrenaline spiking my veins.

Just how I liked it.

Wind whipping my clothes, this rush of air, the peacefulness of nothing.

Thoughts dissipating.

Gravity owning me as the ground drew near.

Skydiving, the wind blasting my face, my body pummeled, death nipping at my heels and the arrogance of knowing I’d survive.

Those painful thoughts returning and my inability to outrun them, or even outfall them, reminding me I’d messed up again.

And lost my lover to another man.

The same arrogance that had led me to pursuits like this. The same trust that made me believe giving my girlfriend to my best friend to train was a great idea. A stellar endeavor that was supposed to turn out a world-class submissive. After all, this brilliant dominant who I’d entrusted her to was renowned for his unique talent that turned our lovers into legends. He was also the same person who’d pulled me back from the brink time and time again, saving me in Dr. Cameron Cole’s own indelible way. His psychological craft so effective that those of us who endured his special brand of therapy survived it with a sense of having saved ourselves; a profound statement of his brilliance.

Though genius was not without consequence.

This morning I’d told Mia goodbye.

Left her outside Cameron’s Malibu beach house knowing full well he loved her more than me, and he was fatefully waiting inside.

No, it wasn’t that he loved her more…he loved her differently. The kind of passion I’d never seen in Cameron before, the kind that made him willing to give her up for me.

Cameron and I shared an endearing “bromance” – a connection as strong as brothers. Cameron had counseled me back from the edge of madness, back when my life was all about my father’s betrayal and my fiancée’s suicide. I’d been there for Cameron, too, when his life had spiraled after his fiancée Zie had betrayed him and he’d called off their wedding. Together we’d gone on the ultimate bender at Chrysalis which had left subs in our wake, giddy and sated. Cameron, me and Shay – our club’s head of security – had drunk and fucked our way into mythic status.

Cameron had always been such a private man. A good man. So, I threw myself onto my sword and gave him what he deserved: The love of his life – the woman who was meant to be mine.

I’d lied to myself that Mia would come round and learn the ways of a high-class submissive and enjoy being subjugated as she bowed down to me as her master. She only responded to Cameron like that. Proof that her soul had bonded with his…that only one man could truly set her free.

I’d had no choice but to shake my bad boy ways and do the right thing for once. Even if it meant my heart was going to be ripped out of my chest. Getting over her seemed impossible.

The strike to my back sent me spinning.

A flash of a face.

Brendon, my skydiving partner, yelling…something about pulling my cord. Something about deploying my emergency line.

He shot up and that white cloud of a parachute billowed behind him, sending him rising.

Yeah, good point.

My flesh crawling as I realized the danger.

Fuck.

Plummeting. Spinning. So close to blacking out.

My hand tugging, slipping off and trying again, my breath stuttering to fill my lungs with the air it forgot it needed. The cord ignoring these frenzied attempts, palms sweaty, fingers numb as they fumbled.

Unable to tell which way was up or down—

Refusing to give up, forming my body into a D-arch to slow my rate.

Fucking death in the mouth as the ground came up fast.

A yank backwards and I flew upwards, my canopy cordial enough to respond to that final frantic tug and blasting open, slowing my descent.

Silence surrounding me.

The patchwork ground now a solid color of dark green and fenced off boundaries becoming smaller.

With legs bent, my feet hit the dirt hard and I tumbled into a sprint until the parachute’s drag rescinded. I leaned forward, both palms resting on my knees as I sucked in adrenaline- drenched breaths.

My grin widened.

Standing tall I howled my joy.
